Hers's a picture of downtown McPherson. That's Michel in the foreground and you can just barely see Stewart stopped at the light.
I think we're in the Midwest now. The stream beds have water in them, no cattle guards on the roads and the sky is cloudy. The towns have parks and nobody wears cowboy hats.
I have no idea why McPherson is here but I'm sure Sue has already done the research.
This morning we had a few sprinkles going to breakfast. When it was time to ride most put on their rain jackets. I followed Michel's lead, who in 200 days of cycling has never been rained on, and left my jacket in my duffle. As it turned out, we got a rain shower well after we made it to the Days Inn.
Ann left today to go back to New Jersey. She was going to ride to Salinas and then take the bus back to New Jersey. Guess why she's going back to New Jersey - to do another bike ride. Like the girl making my sub said " Wow, That's crazy!"
Tomorrow we're off to Abilene and a rest day. According to the que sheet, we will pass right by Ike's home and museum. Not only that but Barb's Downtown Deli in Abilene is supposed to have great pies. It's going to be hard to top the coconut cream I had in Albuquerque. If you're in Hartsville Barb's Botany Woods Deli makes delicious pumpkin pies.
Happy Birthday to Holly. I didn't know she had to work today until I read yesterday's comments.
Sam, my apologies on McPherson, your historian kept falling asleep, that is why you were honored with a limerick from the man of the house. To be in Abilene is to step back into time.....you are going to be busy, in Old Town, you will be treated to "gunfights", "can can dancers" and other old West treats. Forget the pie and watch the dancers. I am very envious that you will also see the famous C.W.Parker Carousel, 24 hand carved animals plus 4 chariots. As you know, the Carousel is my most favorite thing in the world. May I suggest after you go Wiid Bill Hicock's Rodeo you climb aboard the Excursion Train, then top off you day by eating at Joe Snuffy's Old Fashion Grill. Sounds like a plan to me. Enjoy your day of rest. Two days after today you will be HALFWAY!!!!!!!! Take care, thinking of you.
ReplyDeleteFinally, a rest day for you --- I was getting tired just waiting for it!
ReplyDeleteWhen you enjoy some of the attractions Sue suggests you probably don't need to worry about any Indian fights. One of the last ones was in January, 1876.
If Chas doesn't get to it, this Abilene also claims the 1956 Bob Gibson tune is written about it (not Texas).
"Abilene, Abilene, prettiest town I've ever seen. Women there don't treat you mean, in Abilene, my Abilene."
Bob obviously thought hard about these lyrics.
Hey, I just looked at a Webcam shot of Ike's boyhood home in Abilene. All I could see was a freshly cut lawn and some trees leading to peek at the house. It's kind of like I'm in same place as you --- who would have thought it possible back in the days when Claybaby was annoying Marge and Flo and Walt and me at the old neighborhood store.
Holly, hope you take a little time to reflect on the good happenings you plan for this year -- beyond the tough work. You've earned some happiness at 39!
hey festus, i have been thinking about that song for a day or two....then i started thinking it actually "aberdeen" and i think that is in texas..........but when it comes to music, i would never disagree with chuck (the rhino) rheutan........no one in this world knows more about music than him....so just this one time i will believe you, and the bob gibson i read about in my favorite baseball book struck out 3 batters in a row on 9 (NINE) pitches in the bottom of the ninth when his team was leading 2-1...........nine pitches, all of them fastballs.......
ReplyDeleteHi Sam!
ReplyDeleteHope your ride is going well! Can't believe that there's a Buckeye Street in Kansas! There are Buckeyes everywhere! Did you see
any sparkly "red slippers" laying around on the side of the road while you were rolling along the highway? Take care and be safe!
