Day 17 Guymon, OK to Liberal, KS 39 miles

I think our short day today was because of the motel situation. It was either stop in Liberal or ride another 80 plus miles to Dodge City. That would be a tough day. Mack said they did that in the past but decided it was a little too much. I'm glad.

Liberal, I think, is more of a farm town where Guymon and Dalhart were more ranch towns. In those towns the guys dress like cowboys - big hats, big belt buckles, boots (some with spurs) and big mustaches. Here in Liberal there are more ball caps and shorts.

The forecast for the next couple of days has the wind from the South. We have 83 miles tomorrow and 86 the next. We're going to need the push.

  1. Hey Sam....."you must be in Kansas"....Liberal, Ks has the world's largest mud house, museum with Indian artifacts and items from the expedition of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado expedition in 1541 and you will find a recreation of Dorothy's house and the Yellow Brick road. Thefirst settlergave water tothirsty travelersand they replied that is very liberal of you. Now you know everything about Liberal, KS. Jim just read about a man who shuns bikes and is walking from Oceanside, NJ to Oceanside, OR. The roads are full of people who are not afraid to fulfill their spirit of adventure. Have fun and say hey to Matt Dillon and the Longbranch Saloon, maybe Miss Kitty will be there tomorrow. Stay safe "munchkin".

  3. Great picture of your arrival in Kansas! I think you will have some great times reviewing your trip. Chas and I better get ready to hear "Did I ever tell you guys about.........?"

By the way, I've got a story about Kansas -- Clayhead will like this one. I had to escort a prisoner (guy who went AWOL and went on a crime spree of robberies) from Fort Polk, Louisiana, to Fort Leavenworth Prison in Kansas. The army would hire civilian pilots for transport.

We stopped somewhere in Texas to refuel and the prisoner asked if he could stretch his legs and use a bathroom. The next thing I knew he had climbed out a small bathroom window and some mechanic working on a plane noticed his handcuffs and grabbed him. The mechanic came around the building and asked me if I was missing anything. Anyway, we eventually got to Kansas and I haven't returned since. You might want to lock up your valuables in case this guy is still in the area.

Sounds like you'll appreciate the break after nine straight days. Wish you well, buddy!
