Passed through Funk on the way to Wooster. Don't know how Funk got it's name. That will be a challenge for some of you history researchers out there. Funk appeared to be an Amish community. I saw boys in their straw hats working in the garden with their dad. They waved as we went by.
Wooster has a nice downtown. The Best Western is just a few blocks from the center of town - just like Timberlanes but a few levels better. We had dinner at the "Broken Rocks Cafe". The menu said it was named after the one of the owner's favorite places on Lake Michigan. They bake their own bread and it's very good so if you're in Wooster it's a place to try.
We rode through Delaware this morning - another nice town. Greg, from California, went to high school and college in Delaware. He went off the route to ride by his old home. I think that it was quite an event for him. Lots of "Block O" flags and pennants in Delaware. That was an event for me. It's just up the road from Columbus.
I ride with Michel from Montreal a lot. He said "I'm tired of seeing all corn". We have been seeing "all corn" since eastern Kansas. I told him that at that it's not likely to change until maybe Vermont.
Thanks for all the birthday greetings. It was nice to hear from "Aunt Margie".
Tomorrow we're off to Niles, Ohio. Planning to meet up with Jim and Sue at Mill Creek Park on Berlin Lake - its one of our rest stops. I think it's the same place that my Aunt Nellie and Uncle Bill would take John and I fishing -really. It's probably also one of the places one of Old Dick's girlfriends threw his class ring out of the car window. There are a lot of those in Ohio.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM.........WOW....you are nearing your birthplace.....kind of weird that you will be near to your birthplace the day after you birthday.....it will be good to see you... Okay you asked for it.....FUNK is an uniincorporated community in southwester Plain Township, Wayne County. Because it is not tracked by the U.S. Census (or anybody else) a Census population is not available. The origins of Funk's name are not well-documented. Their is a well-know swamp close by, "The Shreve Swamp"....supposed to be an interesting place to visit. On to Niles, what a ride we are all having. Thanks for the opportunity to share it with us. See you tomorrow.
ReplyDeletesorry, mispelled "There"....am too excited about seeing you.
ReplyDeletethe last thing you want to do is follow beaver barrett's directions through Mill Creek Park.....many times we ended up some where and he was sure he knew where we were.......but he didn't have a clue.
ReplyDeletehave a good ride tomorrow....enjoy the great sue and jimbo.........it will be 100 here again tomorrow
again, happy birthday......hope you hook up with spark and susan too....don't forget to fasten your seatbelt.........hope you had a good birthday..
Happy Birthday!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSam,
ReplyDeleteHope your weather held for your meeting with Sue and Jim at Mill Creek Park. That park is very underrated, as is Berlin Lake. I used to give tours of Mill Creek -- apparently, Claybabs is still upset about the shortcut to school I took through the park and the incident at 'Bears Den'. True, I did not know there were still bears in there and it is a little confusing to get out of the area, but that is part of what makes the park so great. She wouldn't have passed that final exam even if I had gotten her to school on time to take it.
I am anxious to read your posting tonight -- must have been an interesting day -- hope the auto and truck drivers borrowed a few courtesy tips from those Kansas drivers. I'll bet you never thought that Niles, Ohio, would look so good to you.
Since you are riding with Michel why not pick up a little French on the ride? You can impress them in Hartsville by ordering a hamburgler (and fries) in French.
If you didn't have so much action going on I was going to suggest that if your tooth was still bothering you you should detour to Dr. Sandrock and get fixed up. He probably started the problem when you got wacked in the jaw and nose by that branch when you were trimming that tree on his property.
By the way, don't have as much on Funk as Sue, but you can get a ringtone from the song,
P.Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)!
My guess is P.Funk might have some connection with the sign.
Stay alert as you head northeast -- tell Michel with a little luck he'll see some stone quarries and more roadkill on the next leg.
talked to the beaver today, he babbled about getting around in mill creek park, i was late to many classes because of his "shortcuts"...i fell once on ice and he didn't even help me up
ReplyDeleteso cool to be in ohio during your birthday and tomorrow is sparkle's birthday, maybe those hags will show up
beaver has started up a senior softball team, i guess he is the manager and will tell all the players what they are doing wrong...perfect roll for him, chas offered to be a sub even though he is 6 hours away.....
anxious to hear from sue about the rendevous...i wonder if jimbo picks up the tab.i doubt it!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM!
