Day 39 Syracuse to Little Falls, NY, 78 miles

Here's a picture 0f the little falls in Little Falls. Little Falls is in the Mohawk Valley on the banks of the Erie Canal. There's a big lock here on the canal. It raises and lowers boats 40 feet. I walked down to the lock hoping to see it operate but had to settle for reading about it.

Roy crashed today. They took him to the hospital and his bike to the bike shop. He is supposed to be riding to the motel from where he went down but we haven't see him yet. If they let him go from the hospital, he must not be hurt too badly. Roy told me some weeks ago that he was going to ride every each of the tour.

The Knights Inn isn't too bad but on my side it is a little noisy. There's a busy railroad just across the street and a fast train goes by about every half hour. No whistle blowing because all the crossings have bridges. So it could be worse.

We have three more full days of riding. Tomorrow looks to be pretty easy but the next two are in Vermont and New Hampshire and will have a lot of climbing. The last day is only 18 miles when we finally hit the ocean. I'm going to try my best to heed Old Dick's maxim and "not do anything stupid". What great advice!

Here comes another train.

  5. I think tonight would be the night you run out and get earplugs. So sorry to hear about Roy, hope he is okay........Albany looms....Albany is the oldest surviving European settlements from the original Thirteen Colonies. It was originally inhabited by the Algonquin Indian tribe. It is located in the Humid Continental Zone (Koppen climate classification) bet you didn't know that, did you!!!....the weather varies like crazy and you never know what you are going to get in Albany. Seems like a neat place....enjoy....when you get to Brattleboro there is the most fabulous deli you will ever see...it's outside of town a little bit, it is on the South side of town..cannot recall the name but it is worth the stop...I envy you for being up there in that area...I really like it. Take care Sam, just a few more days and you HAVE DONE IT!!!!! Hope you get some rest. Thinkin of you.

  6. Hi, Sammy!
So sorry to hear Roy crashed. Hope he can finish. Hope you sleep well for the final push.
We are in Scarborough, Maine at a Residence Inn tonight. It was fun thinking of your riding experience today as we drove. We kept looking for you! We ate dinner in New Hampshire. We will be thinking of you. Today was beautiful. It also sounds like you will have nice weather to finish. This may be our last post. We head to Ellsworth tomorrow.
    Love,
    Margie and Beth

  7. Rosemary & I just polished off a bottle of Clos Dubois celebrating your arrival in Little Falls - a place neither of us have been. We will follow you to the end. Great picture today. We marvel at your overall excursion. Hope the heat is not too bad the last few days. As the dude on Hill Street Blues used to say - be careful out there. Chuck & Rosemary

  8. Sam,
So Roy flopped -- what a weiner! When you see him just drive home the point that his failure to complete every inch of this ride is a priceless experience in that it will force him to choose another challenge he can complete -- like knitting a sweater for a Christmas gift!

Really, hope he can get back to finish with the crew. After he gets to the ocean Roy should be even more proud that he overcame a hospital visit in these last days.

Good luck with the hill climbs -- I am going to catch the Phillies and Indians in an Inter league game tonight. Maybe I can rip a foul ball from the glove of some sniffling little kid on his first trip to the ball park. It's on my bucket list.

That is a goood picturre. Like 'Em, I too hav just poilshed off a botell of Litttle Fals while
celabrrating you and the noisy trannnies of Clus Dobuis. By the waay, did you heer that babs haas a new mule?
